From Teeth to Faces: What Twenty Years in Dentistry Taught Me About Aesthetics

People are sometimes surprised to learn that I spent the first two decades of my career as a dental surgeon before I ever picked up a syringe of filler. They shouldn’t be, because I don’t think there’s a better training ground for facial aesthetics than dentistry. Here’s why that background matters, and what it means for anyone who sits in my chair.
An intimate knowledge of the anatomy
Dentistry is, at its heart, the study of the lower face. For twenty years I worked millimetre by millimetre around the mouth, the jaw and the muscles that move them. I know where the nerves and vessels run, how the bite and the jawline shape the face, and how a small change in one structure ripples out to the rest. When I assess a face for aesthetic treatment now, I’m reading it with that same anatomical detail and that matters enormously for both safety and results.
A precise, gentle hand
Dentistry also teaches a particular kind of hand. Working in the mouth all day, you learn to be precise, to inject comfortably, and to keep a nervous person calm while you carry out delicate work in a sensitive area. Patients often tell me they barely felt their treatment, and I put a lot of that down to years of practice with a needle in one of the most sensitive parts of the face there is.
Seeing the whole smile
Most of all, dentistry taught me to see the smile as a whole. A beautiful smile isn’t just teeth, and it isn’t just lips — it’s the way the entire lower face frames them.
